Tilford Teig

Tilford John Teig, 88, a longtime Stanhope area farmer, died Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the Israel Hospice House in Ames. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, with Rev. Katharine Yarnell officiating. Burial will be in the Lawn Hill Cemetery, southeast of Stanhope. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday and prior to the service on Wednesday. Tilford John Teig, son of Martin and Emma West Teig, was born March 7, 1925 on the farm near Stanhope where he spent his entire life. After graduating from Stanhope High School he farmed in partnership with his father. His high regard for agriculture gave meaning to his life. Many activities kept Tilford's years full and rewarding. He was known for his excellent peanut brittle and walnut fudge. He reveled in making hundreds of "perfect" lefse. Tilford felt honored to have been given many opportunities to serve his community. He was a charter member of the Stanhope Lions Club, proud of his perfect attendance record until his recent decline in health, and a devoted Watermelon Day worker. He was the initial president of the Hamilton County Pork producers, a member and on the board of the Hamilton County Cattleman's Association, and past president of the Hamilton County Farm Bureau, as well as being a leader of the Clear Lake Sailor's 4-H Club and past member of the 4-H Foundation board. Tilford enjoyed his time working with the Hamilton County Republicans and the Central Committee. He served 34 years as a member of the board of directors of Central Iowa Mutual Insurance Company until its merger with Farmer's Mutual Hail Insurance Company. He was also a founding member of the Little Wall Lake Sportman's Club. As a life long member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, being baptized and confirmed there, Tilford served in many capacities as officer and member of committees. He also served his community as township clerk for many years and sexton of Lawn Hill Cemetery for 40 plus years. A devoted family member, he particularly enjoyed his grandchildren and spending time with them and hearing of their activities. Tilford was married to his beloved wife, Wilda, for 58 years until her death in 2008. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Norman, Mervin, Everett and Wendell. Tilford is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Russ and Sandy Teig of Jewell; John and Dawn Teig of Elkhart; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Tom Conley of Urbandale; grandchildren, Lindsay and Nick Wessels; Dustin, Alison, Amanda and Nicholas Teig; brothers-in-law, Wilbur (Eleanor) Schumaker of Webster City and Gilbert Schumaker of Boise, ID and many nieces and nephews.
