Shirley Ann Doolittle, the daughter of Christian C. and Esther J. (Vegors) Juhl, was born November 27, 1930 in Webster City, Iowa. She was brought home to her family farm near Brushy Creek in rural Webster County. She attended the nearby Washington Township #1 country school through 8th grade and completed her education at Lincoln High School in Webster City, graduating with the class of 1949.
She was united in marriage to Donald L. Doolittle of Webster City on June 12, 1949 at Washington Lutheran Church in Duncombe, and together they made their home on the Juhl family farm.
Shirley was a farmer’s daughter, and a devoted farm wife and mother, being active in the farming process throughout her life. In later years, she worked at Hearing Unlimited in Webster City. Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, she was a member of Washington Lutheran Church in Duncombe, Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City, and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Callender. She was an active member of Church Circles, Hamilton County Cowbelles, and Tri T. Throughout her life, Shirley enjoyed horses, baking cookies, gardening, and welcoming family and friends to her home.
Shirley passed away on Monday, July 24, 2023 at Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation in Webster City, IA, at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her parents; her mother and father-in-law, Lloyd and Lottie Doolittle; her son, James J. Doolittle; son-in-law, Emmett J. Cooney; and siblings, Norman (Louise) Juhl, and Beverly (John) Ostlund.
Survivors include her husband, Don Doolittle of rural Duncombe; children: Kristin Cooney of rural Duncombe, Polly Doolittle (Ladd Ventling) of rural Webster City, Dan (Vicki) Doolittle of Webster City, and Tricia (Bill) Bird of Onawa, IA; grandchildren: Tom (Nicky) Cooney, Megen (Craig) Johnson, Jim (Mariah) Doolittle, and Libby (Ethan) Anderson; nine great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; beloved nieces and nephews; family and cherished friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 8, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Foster’s Funeral Home in Webster City. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 9, at 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
