Richard Arends

Richard V. Arends, 90, of Webster City, died Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with Revs Mike Kroona and Kari Foss officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday and at the church on Tuesday. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post # 191. Richard Van Arends, son of Arthur and Jennie Hassebrock Arends, was born June 14, 1924 at the Mercy Hospital in Webster City. He attended rural schools and graduated from Jewell high school in 1940. He then attended A.I.B. for one year, then worked at Rath Packing at Waterloo. He served in the U.S. Army - Headquarters, 8th Army at Yokohama, Japan with the Occupation Forces. On July 21, 1946, he married Delores Jane Ehlert at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. The couple farmed in the Squaw Creek area south of Stanhope. They also raised cattle, hogs and turkeys. He drove as a self employed trucker for several years. He is survived by his wife, Delores; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Connie Arends of Webster City; Bruce and Joy Arends of Waterloo; grandchildren, Shelly and Eric Hanson;Kurt and Anne Arends; Rossi and Corbin Payne; Jared Arends; Jacob and Emily Arends; Shawn and Neeley Wetzler; great-grandchildren, Caylee and Abby Payne; Sam McNally; Aidan Hanson; Grant, Allison and Madelyne Arends; Holden and Berkley Wetzler; brothers, Al (Patricia) Arends of Albert Lea, MN; Larry (Jane) Arends of Prior Lake, MN; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arthur Arends, Jr. Richard was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and a former member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church at Stanhope; was on the Stanhope and South Hamilton school board for 13 years; was on the Hamilton County Beef Board; former president of the church board of Our Saviors Lutheran; an usher and greeter at Trinity; served on the Hamilton County Public Hospital board for two terms; he enjoyed fishing and especially liked to play golf with the Wobbly's.
