Leslie Crouthamel

Leslie "Les" Crouthamel, 93, of Webster City, died Saturday, June 30, 2012 at Crestview Senior Living in Webster City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Patrick Wiedemeier officiating. Burial will follow in the Graceland Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #191 of Webster City. A visitation will be held on Monday evening from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center and after 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the Church. Leslie Russell Crouthamel, son of Edwin and Madge Bandford Crouthamel, was born May 21, 1919 on a farm east of Boone. He received his education from the Boone Community Schools, graduating in 1938. During W.W. II, he served with the United States Army in the South Pacific Theater of Operations. Les also served over 17 years, with the Iowa National Guard, 34th Red Bull Division. On March 10, 1946, he married Imogene Carpenter at the Central Christian Church in Boone. Following W.W. II, he was manager of the National T Food Store in Boone, and in 1954, he transferred to the Fort Dodge store where he was manager until 1958. He then moved to Webster City where he became co-owner of Les and Don's Supermarket. In 1968, he joined Fareway Food Stores where he was produce manager until his retirement in 1980. Les worked part time for Hy Vee Food Stores from 1980 to 1985. Mrs. Crouthamel died September 10, 2006. He had been residing at Crestview Assisted Living for the past 6 years. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Pat Loughry; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Alicia Crouthamel all of Webster City; grandsons, Brett (Emily) Loughry of Webster City; Bart Loughry of Waterloo; Caleb and Seth Crouthamel of Webster City; twin great grandsons, Braydin and Jaxin Loughry. In addition to his wife Imogene, he was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Edwin Crouthamel Jr. in infancy. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He played cards with his Crestview Apartment friends four times a week. Les especially enjoyed watching his grandsons participate in their sporting events. Some of his fondest memories included watching his grandson Caleb, and the 2011 Lynx football team play football during a substate game held in the UNI Dome, and in 2009, taking part in the W.W. II honor flight to Washington D.C. Les was a member of the First Baptist Church in Webster City. His memberships also included, the American Legion Post #191; Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge; Noon Kiwanis Club all of Webster City; and the V.F.W. Post #1856 of Fort Dodge. He served as a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels and R.S.V.P. both of Webster City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Les's memory to the Kendall Young Library, 1201 Willson Avenue, Webster City, IA. 50595, for the purchase of large print books.
