Doris Elkin

Elaine Elkin, of Webster City, died at age 92 on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City. Elaine was born in Marshalltown, Iowa on July 26, 1920. The family moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa where she graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1938 after earning two "Best in Class" awards: one for shorthand and another for her typing skills. In 1941 she married Donald Elkin at the Methodist Church in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Don was in training to become a bombardier and was stationed at many training locations. Elaine and newborn son Randy traveled to all the locations to be with Don. Upon Don's discharge in 1945 they lived in Eagle Grove. In 1947 they moved to Webster City where they built their present home at 1048 Walnut Street. Over the years Elaine wrote a number of short stories about her family life. One of the funniest was "Baptized Chicken Dinner" about a rooster who escaped from becoming Sunday dinner and was only recaptured after he fell into the baptismal of the nearby Baptist Church. Elaine made those stories available in a recent memoir. Elaine loved to cook and take care of her family. She especially enjoyed holiday, Sunday and birthday dinners. Well-known for her whipped potatoes and gravy, divinity candy, cream roll, and kringlas, she was best known for her made-from scratch angel food cakes. Elaine is survived by her husband, Don, sons Randy and Dan Elkin, and daughter Kay Elaine Elkin for whom Elaine and Don have provided over fifty years of inhome care. Elaine is also survived by her brother Harry Snyder of Granger. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Metta and Harry Snyder, and sisters Jean Bilyeu and Shirley Allen. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Foster Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 AM at the Asbury United Methodist Church followed by graveside services in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Friends and family are invited to a luncheon at the church following burial.
